16 - Navigating A Successful Career Transition: When and How To Make the Move
Jul 21, 2024Have you ever felt a strong urge to pivot in your career? Perhaps there's a dream job calling your name, or maybe you are seeking more fulfillment in your professional life. Maybe you suffer with the "Sunday Scaries", the anxiety and dread people often feel on Sunday in anticipation of having to return to work on Monday, especially if they don't enjoy their job.
Whatever the reason, navigating career transitions can be both exhilarating and daunting, especially if you have a family or dependants who rely on you.
This is something I have been through personally and today I will share the steps to help you identify when it’s the right time to make a move and how to do it effectively.
Life is too short to stay in a job or career that no longer excites you. So, if you have a lack of fulfillment, feel stagnant, or are just not appreciated for what you bring, read on.
Recognising the Signs
1. Lack of Fulfillment
When you find yourself constantly feeling unmotivated or unsatisfied with your work, it’s a signal that something needs to change. Your career should be a source of growth and fulfillment and you should be recognised and rewarded appropriately for the value you bring. Check out my post on Love Languages to identify if there is a mismatch between how you are recognised, and how you like to be HERE.
2. Stagnation
If you are no longer learning or growing in your position, it might be time to explore new opportunities. You can’t rely on a new job or role “becoming available”, and even if one does, you may not be the successful candidate - so why leave it to chance? A stagnant career can limit your potential and have a huge impact on your job satisfaction which can then lead to impacting your life satisfaction, planning a move may be a good solution.
3. Burnout
Feeling constantly stressed or overwhelmed? Burnout is a clear sign that it might be time for a change. Whilst it is OK to have short periods of time when you surge on a project which will naturally bring on additional pressure and stress, it should not be a long term or daily thing. Your mental and physical well-being should be your priority.
4. Changing Interests
Our interests and passions evolve over time. If your current career no longer aligns with your interests, it’s worth considering a transition to something that excites you. The world is a large and exciting place, with an abundance of opportunities. Don’t let fear hold you back from something new.
Planning Your Transition
1. Self-Assessment
Begin by assessing your current situation and where you want to go. What are your strengths, interests, and values? Tools like SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) can help to provide clarity. You know I am a huge fan of journalling (Check out my blog post on it HERE), and I can't recommend it enough. Get those thoughts on paper, move them around, scribble and doodle around them if it helps, and start getting clear on your real thoughts and desires.
2. Research
Understand the landscape of the new field or position you’re interested in. What skills are required? What is the job market like? Networking can be invaluable so take some time to meet with people already in the industry or field. You are often only one connection away from someone who is where you want to be, so reach out, be authentic and ask for advice.
3. Skill Enhancement
Identify any skills gaps and invest in learning. This could be through courses, certifications, or even volunteer work. Having the necessary skills can make the transition smoother and increase your appeal to potential employers. It may take some time to get the right qualifications, but by this point you should be confident you are on the right track and the investment will be worth it.
4. Financial Planning
Career transitions can sometimes result in periods without income. Ensure you have a financial cushion to support you during the transition. Budgeting and saving in advance can alleviate some of the stress.
Making the Move
1. Update Your CV and LinkedIn
Tailor your CV and LinkedIn profile to highlight relevant skills and experiences. Make sure they reflect the direction you want to go, rather than just where you’ve been. Make sure the content is concise, relevant and up to date. Most hiring managers will check out your activity online, so make sure you are proud of it.
2. Networking
Leverage your professional network. Attend industry events, join relevant groups, and engage in conversations that can open doors for you. Sometimes, the best opportunities arise through connections so don’t hesitate to reach out and ask questions, advice, or to be put in touch with someone that can help you on your journey.
3. Apply Strategically
Apply for positions that align with your values and goals. Customise each application to the job you’re applying for and take the time to write a personalised cover letter. A targeted approach is more effective than a scattergun method.
4. Prepare for Interviews
When interviewing for new roles, be prepared to discuss your reasons for the transition and how your background makes you the best candidate for the new role. Be honest, there is nothing wrong with wanting a career change, particularly one that is well considered and planned. Highlight your transferable skills, the prep work you have done, and your enthusiasm for the opportunity.
Embrace the Journey
Remember, career transitions are a process, and it’s normal to experience a mix of excitement and anxiety. Stay patient and persistent. Each step brings you closer to a more fulfilling career but remember, you need to take action. Ask yourself, if you looked back in 12 months time, would you be happy with the level (or lack) of progress you have made? You must take positive action, no matter how big or small or you will stay suck.
Challenges are part of the process. Stay positive, and keep your long-term goals in sight. Your determination and resilience will pay off. Having a life strategy, coach, mentor or accountability group will go a long way to keeping you positive and on track as they can offer advice, encouragement, and valuable insights to help you navigate your transition.
Achieving a successful career transition is a big step towards a more fulfilling professional and personal life and when you make a move with purpose and intention, you have less stress and anxiety. By recognising the signs, planning effectively, and taking decisive action, you can turn your dreams into reality. You will probably wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!
