31 - Balance and Stability: Navigating your "Bubbles" of Life
Nov 03, 2024Continuing on from my last post where we explored stepping out of our comfort zone, I wanted to share a concept I often speak about when coaching and mentoring. How we can imagine our life as a collection of "bubbles". These bubbles represent all the crucial areas of our lives: family, relationships, career, physical environment, health and more. Each bubble is interconnected. As I shared in last week’s post, change is essential, however, it is important that we embrace it mindfully by not disrupting too many bubbles at once.
Life changes can be exciting, yet attempting to overhaul every aspect of our life (or bubble) all at once can lead to chaos. Just imagine adjusting your career trajectory while simultaneously navigating a divorce, moving house, or dealing with an illness. It’s like trying to juggle too many balls at once -something is bound to be dropped.
We all need a stable base, a grounding force that gives us the resilience to tackle new challenges. This is why I like to imagine my life in segments. If I have some areas that can provide stability, then it makes change in others seem more manageable and achievable. Consider how a stable home life can provide the comfort and confidence needed to elevate or change your career. It’s much easier to embrace professional growth when you have a solid home foundation.
Whilst we aren’t always in control of the changes around us, it is important to find at least one anchor that is stable and reliable, and you may even find this in a coach or friend.
The Art of Balancing Change
Grab a pen and paper and work through this short exercise:
- Identify Your Bubbles:
- Draw a circle in the middle of a piece of paper, or page in your journal. Write “My Life” in the middle, and from that add as many circles around is signifying all the big areas of your life.
- Identify Your Grounding Bubble:
- Determine which areas of your life are currently strong and stable. These bubbles will act as your anchors. For me, my home life and relationships are my anchors that give me the courage to reach for new heights in my career and coaching business (such as hosting a webinar series on how you can level up your career as pictured!). It has not always been this way, and over time your anchors may change too.
- Choose Your Growth Bubbles:
- Select one or two bubbles to focus on for growth or change. Just like improving public speaking through my Confident Communication Masterclass helps me in my coaching and career, choose an area where incremental steps can lead to significant results.
- Make Incremental Changes:
- Identify and implement changes within your chosen bubble(s). Clear steps like attending a professional development workshop or rewriting your CV and submitting it to some job adverts that interest you can make a big difference. Commit to stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something that scares you a little!
- Monitor and Adjust:
- Regularly check in with yourself to assess the impact of these changes across your bubbles. Life isn't static, and your strategy may need to adapt as circumstances change.
Find Growth in the Overlaps
It’s fascinating how growth in one bubble can positively affect others! When you step out of your comfort zone in your career, it can improve your confidence in social settings or enhance your relationships.
Take a few moments to write down or visualize your life’s bubbles. Which one feels like your anchor right now, and which one it shouting out for change? Remember, growth doesn’t require massive upheaval, it’s about making thoughtful changes while nurturing stability.
