41 - When Changing Careers Isn’t the Answer
Jan 19, 2025
As a passionate coach, I am dedicated to help people find and create a life they love. A topic that comes up often is career transitions. I personally found the transition from the British Army to “Civvy Street” quite challenging, and then the transition from a small business to large corporation daunting. Both were sme of the most challenging but rewarding points of my life. Then there are the internal transitions, where you take on a new role or perhaps promotion, these often come with pressure but some existing knowledge of the organisation you work for.
Depending on your situation, you may think that the only way “out” of where you are at is through a big change – a new company, new industry, new everything. Today, I want to explore the concept of "evolution, not revolution" in your professional journey - a notion recently highlighted by Richard Harpin, founder of HomeServe.
Understanding Evolution vs. Revolution in Careers
Harpin emphasises the importance of continuous, incremental improvements within your current role or industry, rather than making drastic changes. This approach can give you sustainable growth whilst also allowing you to build upon your existing skills and experiences.
So why might you opt for evolution over revolution? For many people, the fear of uncertainly and change keeps them put, sometimes it is responsibilities or commitments that have you chained to your existing role. It doesn’t mean you can’t evolve and develop, finding growth and things you enjoy.
When to Consider Evolving Within Your Current Path
Before contemplating a significant career shift, assess whether you can achieve your professional goals through evolution:
-
Stagnation in Your Role: If you feel your learning has plateaued, seek new challenges or responsibilities within your current organisation. Where else can you use your skills and expertise? It is not often that opportunities come to you (especially if you have been in a rut for a while) so seek them out.
-
Desire for Skill Enhancement: Pursue professional development opportunities that align with your career aspirations. I thoroughly enjoy learning new things, and the community that comes with it. Research opportunities around you that can help you develop your skill set, this not only adds value to your current position but also prepares you for future roles.
-
Organisational Support: Engage in open dialogues with your supervisors about your career trajectory. A supportive environment that encourages growth can be instrumental in your decision to stay and evolve. If you can’t get what you need from your line manager, seek out a mentor within your organisation who can give you a different perspective. They may also have sight to opportunities that you don’t.
When a Career Revolution Might Be Necessary
While evolution is often beneficial, there are scenarios where a more radical change is warranted:
-
Persistent Job Dissatisfaction: If efforts to find fulfilment within your current role or industry have been exhausted, it may be time to explore new opportunities elsewhere. Don’t rush into this, and always have something lined up before you make the leap.
-
Misalignment with Personal Values: When your work environment or industry conflicts with your core values, there is often little you can do. Rather than prolonging your pain and suffering, proactively find a role that resonates with your principles. Get clear on what you can and can’t change, this is unlikely one you will ever change.
-
Health and Well-being Concerns: A career that adversely affects your mental or physical health is a clear indicator that change is necessary. If you can’t make the jump yet, creating a plan to get you from where you are today, to where you want to be can be the thing you need to keep you focused and positive.
Deciding whether to evolve within your current career or to make the big leap into a new path is a deeply personal choice. Consider if "evolution, not revolution," is right for you, and make a plan that works for your situation.
Your career journey is unique, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Stay attuned to your aspirations, and don't hesitate to seek guidance when needed.
