42 - The 8 steps to transition into a new career in 2025

development strategy where to start Jan 26, 2025

So, you’ve decided you want to change career in 2025 – but not sure where to start or what to do?

I’ve got you.

Whether you are driven by a desire for new challenges, greater fulfilment, or opportunities to grow, transitioning to a new career can feel both exciting and daunting. Many people fear failure, so they stay where they are…stuck for another dull year of the same old. That does not need to be you, and you will be grateful for taking the leap and making a positive change.

I have used these exact steps and seen the benefits and this is why I want to share them with you. With more strategic planning and decision making, you will have reduced risk, less stress, and ultimately more success.

Remember the saying, chase two rabbits and catch none? When you are able to focus your energy in one direction you will achieve great things. Yes you may get lucky and find something that works, if you go straight into job hunting, but how long will it be before you get itchy feet again?

Here is my simple roadmap of practical steps to guide you through transitioning to a new career.

1. Self-Assessment

Begin by clarifying your career and life aspirations. Evaluate your interests, strengths, and values to identify careers that align with who you are. Tools like personality assessments or career quizzes can provide valuable insights too – I would recommend GeniusU to get clear on your strengths and align your career to them.

2. Research and Exploration

Take time to explore the industries or roles you are interested in. Research job descriptions, market trends, and required skills. Consider reaching out to professionals in those fields to gain firsthand insights on the tasks and activities that you could be working on.

3. Skill Development and Education

Identify any skill gaps and seek opportunities to fill them. This might include enrolling in online courses, attending workshops, or obtaining certifications relevant to your new field. Lifelong learning is more accessible than ever with platforms like LinkedIn Learning (Top Tip: Check if you get access to LinkedIn Learning through your current employer!).

4. Gain Experience through Volunteering

Sometimes, hands on experience is what you need to be successful in an application, or to help get more clarity on your way forward. Consider gaining relevant experience by volunteering or taking on part-time projects, as little as a few hours a month can make a huge difference. This not only adds value to your resume but also gives you a taste of what your future may entail. More on this next week!

5. Networking and Relationship Building

Expand your professional network by connecting with individuals in your desired career path. Attend events, join industry groups, and leverage platforms like LinkedIn to build relationships that can offer guidance and open doors. Remember to give as much as you take, and build authentic relationships.

6. CV and LinkedIn Optimisation

Keep your resume up to date, you never know when you may need it. Current and future employers will often check you out your LinkedIn profile too, using it as a digital CV and to get an understanding of your views and experience. Keep it fresh and professional, consider if what you have posted in the past is appropriate or if you need to have a clear out. Highlight transferable skills, relevant experiences, and any qualifications you've acquired over your career.

7. Don’t Make the Leap Until You are Ready

While the allure of a new career is exciting, it is crucial to ensure you are prepared before making any significant changes. Consider staying in your current role until you have a clear plan and your next opportunity is secured. When you already have a job, you exude a steady, assured energy in interviews that reflects confidence and competence. Don’t leave where you are at until you have an agreed way forward.

8. Mindset and Resilience

Embrace change with an open, growth-oriented mindset. It is important to remain adaptable and resilient, as setbacks are just stepping stones to success. Ensure you have a few supportive people around you who will give you the support and guidance when you need it. With a clear strategy, it makes it much easier to keep moving forward.

Remember, transitioning to a new career is a journey that blends patience, persistence, and proactive efforts.
